Preparing Your Commercial Building For Painting

Posted on: 24 March 2023

When your commercial structure needs a new coat of paint, hiring a commercial painting company to handle the job is often the most efficient method. Commercial painting typically involves working inside or outside buildings that are large and may require special tools and knowledge that make the job more challenging, so hiring an experienced team is vital to project success.

Exterior Painting

When painting the outside of a large commercial building, you will often need to take some steps to ensure the area is ready for painters when they arrive. Things like bushes, trees, and flowerbeds need covering to ensure they are protected from overspray, and vehicles outside your building need to be parked far enough away that any overspray does not reach them.

Masking windows and other features on the building is often done by the painters, but check with the commercial painting company when they generate your estimate to determine if there are things you need to do before the painting starts. Most commercial painters will bring the tools and equipment they need to the job site, but they may ask for a place to secure tools overnight if the job will take more than one day to complete.

Exterior painting often also requires some flexibility, because if the weather changes unexpectedly, delays can occur, and the painting may need to stop until the weather improves. In some cases, tarps or tents can be used to continue working, but the commercial painting company will often make that call when necessary.

Interior Painting

Interior painting is different than exterior in many ways, and the commercial painting company doing the work will coordinate with you to ensure they have access to the areas they need to get to during the painting process. A commercial project that involves a shop or facility where manufacturing or other work is ongoing may require the painters to work after hours to get to all the areas necessary.

If you have office spaces that are also getting painted, preparing the space by removing furniture or covering it is essential. Painting an active commercial space is often more challenging because the painting process can cause disruptions, so talk with the painting company you are considering to determine the best way to complete the work with as few disruptions as possible.

In many cases, experienced painters have worked in similar conditions and may have some suggestions to help streamline the process for you. Working on weekends, late at night, or during vacations or shutdowns are all excellent options, but may require you to have someone in the building to ensure everything does as planned and the building is secure while work is ongoing.
